Crew School

Experience the thrill of Lake Michigan sailing this summer with our Crew School program. This comprehensive program is designed for participants aged 18 and older, who are looking to get a head start on the boating season in Chicago in a classroom environment with some outdoor demonstrations. Whether you just bought a boat, you want to start cruising on longer voyages, or you are experienced and want to try competitive racing, our program will make your season better. Our instructors, including licensed captains and seasoned sailing instructors will teach knowledge and skill. We will also introduce you to Montrose Harbor fleets and their skippers seeking crew members for the season.

Curriculum The course covers nautical terminology, parts of a boat, physics of sailing, points of sail, crew roles and responsibilities, basic weather awareness, appropriate gear and equipment, safety protocols,  and "rules of the road". Additionally, our hands-on breakout sessions and demonstrations will teach you knot tying, line control, winch operation, and sail handling and care. This course is a six week evening program held on Wednesdays, April 2 - May 7, 2025; 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, with optional After Dark session, 9:00 PM - 9:30 PM.

Additional Details Every student will have be part of a small mentor group within the overall class structure. When the harbors open the Outdoor boat demo night gets you onto the docks. Our after dark program following each class allows for socialization and unstructured discussions with interesting guests and your instructors and mentors including a networking evening to meet-and-greet skippers. Free access to Corinthian University’s YouTube channel and Google Classroom for self guided learning. US Sailing Basic Keelboat book provided plus other materials including a length of rope, and a personal equipment starter kit. 

Continue Your Sailing Journey After completing Crew School, advance your skills with Corinthian University’s Adult Sailing program. With four-week Level 1 and Level 2 sessions offered throughout June, July, and August, these classes are taught by US Sailing Certified Instructors and fill up fast.
